Each month, the Mission, Peace and Justice Committee identifies an issue around which we can raise our voices together to advocate for change. We believe that a life of faith requires us to stand up for justice. We invite you to join your voice with ours.
Current Campaign: Funding of the United States Postal Service
In addition to the many services available at a local post office branch, each day the United States Postal Service processes and delivers 181.9 million pieces of First-Class Mail. USPS employees a diverse range of workers (40% of the USPS workforce belong to minority populations). Every two weeks, the USPS pays $2 billion in salaries and benefits.
Join us in writing letters to Alabama Senators Richard Shelby and Doug Jones 1) expressing the importance of the local post office, of USPS services, and of protecting USPS employees; and 2) asking them to consider a measure eliminating the pre-funding mandate under which USPS operates and releasing those saved funds for use now by USPS.
A sample letter is below. We encourage you to use the data in it to craft your personalized letter about your experience with the post office. At a minimum, add your name and zip code. Whether you write your own letter or use the template, please speak up, and speak out!
