Summary of April 26 Session Meeting of University Presbyterian Church
We met with Judy & Jim Taylor and welcomed them into membership of the church by transfer of letter from Christ Harbor UMC, Tuscaloosa. They come to us with a passion for social justice ministry, including the $10.10 movement and “Move to Amend.”
We approved the baptism of Alex Burson, son of Michelle Burson. Alex will be baptized on May 15 and Sherry Kimbro will be his sponsor.
We elected Cathy Andree to be UPC’s commissioner to the Saturday, May 14 meeting of the Presbytery of Sheppards and Lapsley, with Darryl Thornton serving as the alternate.
We heard an update from the UPC-CPC Exploratory Committee. (See Exploratory Committee summary posted on the bulletin board and under “Announcements” on the UPC website, gracetuscaloosa.org.)
Cathy updated the Session on the First Presbyterian campus ministry plans. U-Kirk will continue to worship in the Student Center through the fall semester, moving out by the end of December. All other U-Kirk activities will take place at their new location on University Blvd. near downtown.
June 5 will be a More Light celebration.
Avery Smith will begin their internship on June 5 and will be with us through July 10. Avery’s internship will include teaching a Sunday morning adult education class series, and worship leadership, among other things.
The Session approved a “No Guns in God’s House” recommendation from the Peace & Justice committee. Signs have been posted on the doors to indicate that we join with other houses of worship in being a gun free zone.
The Session will meet again on Wednesday, May 18, with Jerry Lamme providing a devotional.
