July 2016 Session Report

Session Summary

Tuesday, July 12, 2016

The Session of UPC held its regular session meeting on Tuesday, July 12, 2016.

Members Present: Jerry Lamme, Nicole Varnado, Ralph Lane, Becki Evans, Adam Miller, Cathy Andreen. Clerk: Nancy DuPree. Moderator: Cathy Hoop

Members Excused: Darryl Thornton, Sandy Wolfe, Chris Poole

The session meeting was opened with the lighting of the Christ candle, followed by the sharing of joys and concerns, a scripture reading by Jerry and a prayer.

The session received requests for financial support from Rachel Crilley, who will be serving as a PC (USA) Young Adult Volunteer in South Korea beginning in September, and from Madison Vaughn, who begins seminary at Columbia Theological in August.

Both of these individuals have served UPC, working with our children’s ministries and Madison was an intern last summer. The Session voted to send $500 to support Rachel’s team, and $2,500 for Madison. (Rachel has met her personal requirement, but our funding will support her team members.) It was noted that Avery Smith has full scholarship, which also covers living expenses and books.

The session received a request from Chris Poole to resign from the rest of her term on Session (Class of 2017). This request was approved, with regret. A nominating committee will seek someone to complete her term.

The session then discussed the following questions:

  • What are three tangible or intangible ways you see yourself participating in the process of bringing these two congregations together?

  • What are the unique gifts you bring to this conversation?

  • What are some life experiences that you can draw from as we move into this period of transition and change?

  • What stories from scripture could offer us guidance as we move forward?

The session reviewed and approved the minutes of the June meeting.

The session will meet again on August 17 at 5:30.The meeting was closed with prayer.
